Complex layouts may not convert exactly. Text boxes, columns, fonts and page breaks can differ from Word.
Read .docx attachments on any phone, tablet or computer without Microsoft Word or an account. Text, images and tables are shown in order, with the word count, character count and reading time listed below the document.
How to use
- Drop a .docx file on the card, tap to choose one, or press Ctrl+O. A sample document is shown until you do.
- Read the document below. The word count, characters, paragraphs and reading time are listed below it; tap a number to copy it.
- To make a PDF, tap Download PDF for a text PDF with images and tables, or tap Print and choose Save as PDF to keep the look closest to Word.
- For HTML, Markdown or plain text, pick the tab, then copy the result or download it as a file.
- The converter keeps the structure: headings, bold and italic, lists, tables, links, footnotes and images. Fonts, colors, columns, text boxes and exact page breaks are not carried over.
- Download PDF makes real, selectable and searchable text in Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Korean and Japanese (the Korean and Japanese font loads only when a document needs it). For Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and simplified Chinese, use Print, which uses your system fonts.
- Images are embedded in the HTML and Markdown as data URIs, so each file works on its own.
- Old .doc files and password-protected documents can’t be opened. Save them as .docx first.
- The document is read in your browser and never uploaded.
What a .docx file is
Since Word 2007, .docx has been the default Word format: a ZIP archive of XML files following the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). Because the structure is open, the text, styles, tables and images can be read without Word. Older binary .doc files and password-protected documents use a different format and cannot be opened here; save them as .docx first.
What the conversion keeps
Headings, bold and italic, numbered and bulleted lists, tables, links, footnotes and images are carried over. Fonts, colors, columns, text boxes and exact page breaks are not, because HTML, Markdown and text describe structure rather than layout.
For a PDF, Download PDF creates real, selectable and searchable text with images and tables; Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Korean and Japanese are supported. For the closest look to Word, or for Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and simplified Chinese, use Print and choose Save as PDF.
Word count and statistics
Below the document you see the number of words, characters with and without spaces, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. Tap a number to copy it, which helps with essay limits, translation quotes and submission forms that set a maximum length.
Frequently asked questions
How can I open a .docx file without Word?
Drop the file here or tap to choose it. The document is shown with its text, images and tables on any phone or computer, without installing anything.
How do I convert DOCX to PDF for free?
Open the file and tap Download PDF for a text PDF, or tap Print and choose Save as PDF to keep the layout closest to Word. Neither option uploads the file.
Will my formatting be kept?
The structure is kept: headings, emphasis, lists, tables, links and images. Exact fonts, colors, columns and page breaks are not, so complex layouts look simpler.
Can I open old .doc files?
No. Only .docx is supported. Open the .doc in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save it as .docx first.
How are words counted?
Words are separated by spaces and punctuation; in Japanese and Chinese, where words are not separated by spaces, each character is counted. Characters are counted with and without spaces.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The .docx file is unpacked and converted in your browser, so the document stays on your device.
