How emoji work
An emoji is a Unicode character, or a short sequence of them, that your system draws as a color picture. Many are built from parts: a skin tone is one of five modifiers added after the base emoji (based on the Fitzpatrick scale), and family or profession emoji join several emoji with an invisible zero-width joiner. That is why one emoji can count as two or more characters in some character counters.
The look differs between Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung, because each draws its own set. New emoji arrive with yearly Unicode releases, and a device only shows them after a system update; older devices may show a box or the separate parts instead.
Finding the right emoji
Search uses the official names plus the CLDR keyword lists that phones also use, in the page language, so words like party, sad or ok find the matching faces and gestures. The skin tone you choose with the hand button is remembered and applied to every emoji that supports it.
