Check the official requirements before you submit. Whether a photo is accepted is decided by the issuing authority.

Japanese passport photos are 45 mm tall and 35 mm wide, with 32 to 36 mm from chin to the top of the head and about 4 mm (2 to 6 mm) of space above it. Japan accepts glasses without glare; the photo must be recent and on a plain background.

How to use

  1. Pick the document. The size, head height and print size update to match.
  2. Drop a photo taken straight on, against a plain wall, with even light. Tap Try a sample to see how it works.
  3. The face is found on your device, then sized and centered between the guides. Drag, zoom or rotate to fine-tune until the check turns green.
  4. Choose a white or gray background if needed, then download the photo or a print sheet for 4×6 in, 10×15 cm, A4 or Letter.
  • The yellow bands mark where the top of the head and the chin should be; the purple band marks the eye line where a document defines it.
  • Head height is measured from chin to the top of the head, including hair. The estimate comes from the eyes and chin, so check it against the guides.
  • Files are exported at 300 DPI: 35×45 mm is 413×531 px and 2×2 in is 600×600 px. Print sheets at 100% scale, without fit-to-page.
  • Photos stay on your device. Face detection uses MediaPipe Face Detection and background replacement uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation (both Apache-2.0, by Google).
  • Rules change and offices differ. Check the current requirements of the issuing authority before you submit.

Common photo sizes

The US, US visa and Indian 2 × 2 inch formats (51 × 51 mm) are 600 × 600 px at 300 DPI, with a head of 1 to 1⅜ in (25–35 mm). Schengen visas, Germany, France, Japan, Korea and Russia use 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px) with a head of 32–36 mm; the UK also uses 35 × 45 mm but with a head of 29–34 mm. China visas use 33 × 48 mm, Canada and Brazil 50 × 70 mm.

Head height is measured from the chin to the top of the head, including hair. On a 35 × 45 mm photo a 32–36 mm head fills about 70 to 80 % of the height, the proportion set by the ICAO standard that most countries follow.

Taking a photo that passes

Stand about a meter from a plain, light wall and have someone else take the picture at eye level. Use soft, even light from the front, with no shadows on the face or behind you. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open. Remove hats and, for US photos, glasses. Most offices want a photo taken within the last six months.

Printing at the right size

Print the sheet at 100 % (actual size), never with fit to page, or every photo will be slightly too small. A 4 × 6 in or 10 × 15 cm sheet can be printed cheaply at any photo kiosk or lab. Cut along the thin guides. Rules change and offices differ, so check the current requirements of the issuing authority before you submit.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country: the US uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), most of Europe, Japan and Korea 35 × 45 mm, China visas 33 × 48 mm and Canada 50 × 70 mm. Pick the document and the tool applies its size.

Can I take my own passport photo with a phone?

Many countries accept it if the photo meets the rules: plain light background, even light, neutral expression and the right head size. The guides and the size check show whether your photo fits.

How many pixels is a 2 × 2 inch photo?

600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI. That is also the minimum size for the digital photo uploaded with a US visa application.

How do I print passport photos at home or at a store?

Download the print sheet for 4 × 6 in or 10 × 15 cm and order a normal photo print, or print an A4 or Letter sheet at 100 % scale. Cut along the guides.

Can I wear glasses in a passport photo?

Rules vary. The US does not allow glasses in passport and visa photos; other countries allow them if there is no glare and the eyes are clearly visible. Check your country’s rules.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection and background replacement run on your device with MediaPipe models, so the photo never leaves it.
