More sounds
Keep the volume moderate, especially for babies: put the device well away from the crib and keep it quiet. Binaural beats need headphones; their effects are not proven and they are not a treatment.
A white noise and ambient sound mixer: play white, pink or brown noise, rain, thunder, ocean, fan, café and more, alone or layered with a volume for each. Every sound is generated live in your browser, so it never loops audibly and needs no download. Set a sleep timer that fades out, and share a mix as a link.
How to use
- Tap a sound to play it. Tap more sounds to mix them; each one gets its own volume slider.
- Or pick a mix such as Sleep or Rainy café.
- Set the timer for the night: the sound fades out slowly and stops.
- Share sends a link with your sounds and volumes.
- Every sound is generated live in your browser with random drops, waves and gusts, so it never repeats the same way and needs no download.
- It keeps playing in the background and, where the browser allows it, with the screen locked; the lock screen and media keys can play and pause.
- Your last mix is saved on this device. Turn on Screen on to stop the screen from sleeping.
White, pink and brown noise
All three contain every audible frequency; they differ in balance. White noise has equal power per hertz, which sounds bright and hissy, like untuned radio static. Pink noise drops 3 dB per octave, so every octave carries the same energy and it sounds softer and more even, close to steady rain. Brown noise drops 6 dB per octave and sounds deep and rumbling, like a distant waterfall or the inside of a plane.
Many people find brown or pink noise easier to sleep to than white, because there is less high-frequency hiss. For masking speech in an open office, white or pink noise covers the voice range better.
Using sound for sleep, focus and babies
Steady sound works by masking: it raises the background so sudden noises such as traffic, a door or a neighbour's TV stand out less. Keep the volume as low as still works. For babies, place the device well away from the crib, many pediatric sources suggest at least 2 m (about 7 feet), and keep it quiet; some sound machines can exceed 85 dB at full volume. The sleep timer (15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes) fades out slowly so the stop doesn't wake you.
Mixing and playback
Tap sounds to layer them, set each volume, or start from a mix such as Sleep, Rainy café, Thunderstorm or Beach. Your last mix is saved on this device. Audio keeps playing in the background and, where the browser allows, with the screen locked, with lock-screen and media-key controls.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
White noise has equal power at every frequency and sounds hissy. Pink noise is softer with less treble, and brown noise is deeper still, with most energy in the bass.
Which noise is best for sleep?
There is no single answer, but many people prefer brown or pink noise, or rain, because they lack the sharp hiss of white noise. Try each for a few nights.
Is white noise safe for babies?
At a low volume and well away from the crib, steady sound is widely used. Avoid loud levels and long exposure close to a baby's ears.
Will the sound keep playing with the screen off?
In most browsers, yes: it continues in the background and, where supported, with the screen locked. Turn on Screen on if your device stops it.
Do the sounds loop?
No. Every sound is synthesised live with random drops, waves and gusts, so there is no audible loop or download.
Can I share my mix?
Yes. Share creates a link with your sounds and volumes; opening it starts the same mix on any device.
