Keyword density

Paste a text to see how long it takes to read at 238 words per minute and to speak at 150. A 750-word blog post reads in about 3 minutes; a 5-minute talk needs roughly 750 words of script. Word and character counts are shown too.

How to use

  1. Type or paste your text, or drop a .txt or .md file onto the box.
  2. Words and characters update as you type; tap any number to copy it.
  3. Pick a limit such as X 280 or Meta description 160 to see how many characters are left.
  4. Check the keyword density list to spot words you repeat too often.
  • Words and sentences are counted with your browser’s language rules, so Japanese, Chinese and other languages without spaces are counted correctly.
  • Hyphenated words such as well-known count as one word. Emoji count as one character.
  • Reading time uses 238 words per minute (500 characters per minute for Japanese and Chinese); speaking time uses 150 words per minute.
  • X counts links as 23 characters and CJK characters and emoji as 2, just like the X app. SMS switches to 70 characters when the text has characters outside the GSM alphabet.
  • Your text is saved in this browser only and never uploaded.

How words and characters are counted

Words and sentences are split with your browser’s language rules (Intl.Segmenter), so Japanese, Chinese and Thai, which use no spaces, are counted properly. A hyphenated word such as well-known counts as one word, and an emoji counts as one character, even when it is built from several code points.

Characters are shown twice: with spaces, which is what most forms and character limits use, and without spaces, which some publishers and schools ask for. Line breaks count as characters with spaces.

Reading time and limits

Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction found in a 2019 meta-analysis; speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a calm presentation pace. A 1,500-word article therefore takes about 6 minutes to read and 10 minutes to say aloud.

Limits show how many characters are left: X counts links as 23 and CJK characters as 2, and an SMS holds 160 GSM characters or 70 once it contains other characters.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, in the usual count. Most limits, including X, SMS and meta descriptions, count spaces, so check the “with spaces” figure; the “without spaces” figure is there for forms that ask for it.

How many words is one page?

About 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced in a 12-point font, but the real number depends on the font, margins and paragraph breaks.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About 4 minutes at an average reading speed of 238 words per minute, and about 7 minutes if you read it aloud at 150 words per minute.

Are numbers and hyphenated words counted as words?

Yes. A number such as 2026 counts as one word, and a hyphenated compound such as up-to-date also counts as one word.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

Your text is kept in this browser so it is still there when you return, and it is never sent to a server.
