This metronome opens at 80 beats per minute: 750 ms per click, 375 ms per eighth note and 187.5 ms per sixteenth, which you hear with the subdivision buttons.
How to use
- Metronome: drag the ring, use − and +, or click the number to type a tempo. Press Start.
- Choose the time signature, subdivision and sound. Tap a beat dot to switch it between accent, normal and silent.
- Speed up raises the tempo by a set amount every few bars until it reaches your target.
- Tuner: pick an instrument, press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Play one string; tune until the needle is centered and turns green.
- BPM: drop a song to detect its tempo and play it with a click to check, or tap along on the pad.
- Clicks are scheduled ahead on the audio clock, so timing stays steady even when the tab is in the background.
- The tuner uses the YIN pitch method and reads notes from about 30 Hz to 2 kHz. A quiet room helps with low bass strings.
- BPM detection looks for repeating onsets in up to 150 seconds of the track. If the result is half or double the tempo you hear, use the second value shown.
- Microphone audio and songs are processed on your device and never uploaded.
Steady timing in the browser
Clicks are scheduled ahead on the Web Audio clock rather than fired by ordinary page timers, so they stay evenly spaced when the tab is in the background or the device is busy. Three sounds are available, click, wood block and beep, with a volume slider and an optional screen flash on each beat.
Time signatures, accents and subdivisions
Choose 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 or 12/8. Compound meters come with sensible default accents, for example 6/8 is felt as two groups of three, and 7/8 as 2+2+3. Tap any beat dot to cycle it between accent, normal and silent, so you can practise with the click on 2 and 4 only.
Subdivisions add quieter clicks between beats: two (eighths), three (triplets) or four (sixteenths).
Practising with Speed up
Start a passage below the target tempo and let Speed up add a few BPM every few bars until it reaches your maximum, for example +5 BPM every 4 bars from 80 to 120. It builds speed gradually, which is how most teachers suggest working up a difficult part.
Frequently asked questions
What BPM should I practise at?
Start at a tempo where you can play the passage cleanly, often 60 to 70% of the target, then raise it in small steps. Speed up does this automatically.
How do I set the metronome to 6/8?
Choose 6/8 in the time signature row. The first and fourth beats are accented by default, so you hear two groups of three.
Can I hear the click only on beats 2 and 4?
Yes. Tap the dots for beats 1 and 3 until they turn silent. The pattern is remembered for that time signature.
Does the metronome keep time in the background?
Yes. Clicks are scheduled on the audio clock, so tempo stays steady when you switch tabs, as long as the browser keeps playing audio.
What is the tempo range?
From 20 to 300 BPM. Use the arrow keys for ±1 BPM, Shift with the arrows for ±10, or click the number to type a value.
