Text

This Lorem ipsum generator makes placeholder text as paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, in classic Latin or as readable dummy text in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Russian or Korean. Set the amount, wrap it in HTML tags if you need them, and tap to copy. Useful for web mockups, print layouts and font tests.

How to use

  1. Choose paragraphs, sentences, words or list items and set how many with − and + or by typing the number.
  2. Pick Lorem ipsum or a real language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese or Russian.
  3. Turn on HTML to wrap the text in <p> or <li> tags, and “Lorem ipsum…” to start with the classic opening line.
  4. Tap the text to copy it, download it as a file, or press New text for a different version.
  • Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC). It has been used as filler since the 1500s.
  • The language options produce readable, neutral sentences, so you can check line length, hyphenation and fonts with real letter shapes such as ß, ç or Cyrillic.
  • For Japanese, the word count becomes a character count, because Japanese has no spaces between words.
  • Changing the number keeps the existing text and only adds or removes the end.

Where Lorem ipsum comes from

Lorem ipsum is a scrambled passage from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The familiar opening “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit” is cut from the middle of a sentence: “lorem” is the end of the word dolorem (pain). Letraset transfer sheets made the text common among designers in the 1960s, and desktop publishing software kept it alive. It looks like natural language, with a realistic mix of short and long words, but nobody reads it, so reviewers look at the layout instead of the content.

When to use real-language dummy text

Latin hides language-specific problems. German has long compounds that break narrow columns, French adds accents and spaces before punctuation, Russian uses Cyrillic letters that some fonts lack, and Japanese and Korean need different line-breaking rules. Generating neutral sentences in the target language shows how a layout really behaves: line length, hyphenation, font coverage and text height. For Japanese, the count switches from words to characters, because Japanese is written without spaces.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lorem ipsum mean?

Nothing as it stands. It is a scrambled extract from a Latin text by Cicero about ethics; many words are cut or altered, so it cannot be translated as a whole.

How many words are in a paragraph of Lorem ipsum?

Each paragraph here has 3 to 6 sentences, so lengths vary like real text. Choose Words instead of Paragraphs if you need an exact count.

Can I get the text with HTML tags?

Yes. Turn on HTML and paragraphs are wrapped in p tags and list items in li tags inside a ul, ready to paste into a template.

Should I start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”?

It is optional. Turn the option on if you want the classic opening line, which makes the text instantly recognizable as placeholder.

Can I use Lorem ipsum in a live website?

It should be replaced before launch. Placeholder text left on a published page looks unfinished and gives search engines and readers nothing useful.
