Amounts are rounded estimates, so check them against the bill before you pay.
A 20% tip on a $60.00 bill is $12.00, for a total of $72.00. On $120.00 shared by four, each person pays $36.00 including the tip. Mental math: move the decimal point one place and double it.
How to use
- Enter the bill amount and pick a currency.
- Tap a tip percentage or type your own in Custom.
- Set how many people are splitting. The amount each person pays appears at the top.
- For a bill split by dish, open Split bill: add people and items, tap names under an item to assign it, and copy the summary.
- Round up each makes every share a whole amount (100 for JPY, 1,000 for KRW); the tip absorbs the difference and the real tip percentage is shown.
- Tip before tax works out the tip on the amount without tax, as is customary in the US and Canada. Enter the tax rate included in your bill.
- In Split bill, an item with nobody selected is shared by everyone. Tax and tip are spread in proportion to what each person ordered.
- Shares are rounded to the cent so they always add up exactly to the total.
- You can type amounts with a dot or a comma as the decimal separator.
How the tip is calculated
Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100, and total = bill + tip. On an $80 bill a 20% tip is $16, making $96, or $24 each for four people. For quick mental math, 10% moves the decimal point one place; 20% is double that, 15% is 10% plus half of it, and 18% is 20% minus 2%.
Rounding up each share to a whole amount is easier when paying in cash. The tool then shows the real tip percentage, so you can see that rounding $23.40 per person up to $24 turned a 17% tip into 20%.
Tipping customs differ
In the US and Canada, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants, usually on the amount before sales tax, which is why the calculator offers a tip-before-tax option. In the UK a 10–12.5% service charge is often already on the bill. In much of continental Europe, rounding up or leaving 5–10% is common, and in Japan and Korea tipping is generally not expected. Check the bill for an included service charge before adding more.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a 20% tip on $50?
$10, making a total of $60. Move the decimal point one place for 10% ($5) and double it.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
In the US the custom is to tip on the pre-tax amount. Turn on tip before tax and enter the tax rate to calculate it that way.
How do I split the bill with the tip included?
Enter the bill, choose the tip and set the number of people. Each share is shown at the top and the shares are rounded to the cent so they add up to the total exactly.
What is a standard tip in the US?
At sit-down restaurants 15–20% is usual, with 18–20% common in cities. Many people tip less for counter service; follow local practice.
Do I need to tip in Japan or Korea?
Generally no. Restaurants in Japan and Korea do not expect tips, and leaving money can cause confusion.
Does it work with other currencies?
Yes. Pick a currency and rounding uses sensible whole amounts, such as 100 for yen and 1,000 for won.
