History
This random team generator splits a list of names into fair, shuffled teams. Paste the names one per line, choose the number of teams or the number of people per team and press Make teams. Team sizes never differ by more than one person, and you can copy the result straight into a chat or document.
How to use
- Type or paste names into the list, one per line. Names, Wheel and Teams share this list, and it is saved on this device.
- Names: choose how many winners and press Pick. Turn on Remove picked to draw without repeats.
- Wheel: press Spin, tap the wheel or flick it with your finger or mouse. The winner opens in a sheet where you can remove it or spin again.
- Number: set min, max and how many, then press Generate. Unique avoids repeats and Sorted orders the results.
- Dice: choose a die from d4 to d100 and 1–10 dice, then Roll to see every value and the total.
- Coin: tap the coin to flip it. Teams: choose the number of teams or people per team and press Make teams.
- Every result comes from crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so each name, number and face is exactly equally likely.
- On the wheel the winner is drawn fairly the moment the spin starts. How hard you flick only changes the show, never the odds.
- Your list, options and history stay in this browser. Nothing is uploaded.
- Sound and vibration only start after you tap and can be switched off. Vibration works on most Android phones.
How the teams are made
The list is shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by cryptographic randomness, then dealt out one by one like cards. That keeps sizes balanced: 23 people in 4 teams gives teams of 6, 6, 6 and 5, and every possible split is equally likely.
Choose People per team when the group size matters, for example pairs for a lab or 5 players for a basketball game. The number of teams is then rounded up and names are dealt evenly, so 23 people at 5 per team give 5 teams of 5, 5, 5, 4 and 4.
Classroom and game tips
Shuffle again until a split feels right, or keep the first one to stay strictly random. Duplicate names count as separate people, so make sure each name appears once. The same list is shared with the name picker and the wheel.
Everything runs in your browser; your list and history are saved on this device only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a list into random teams?
Paste the names one per line, set the number of teams or people per team and press Make teams. Each press creates a new random split.
Are the teams balanced in size?
Yes. Names are dealt out in turn, so team sizes differ by at most one person.
What if the numbers don’t divide evenly?
With a number of teams, extra people join existing teams one by one. With People per team, the team count is rounded up, so some teams have one person fewer.
Can I make random pairs?
Yes. Set People per team to 2. With an odd number of names, one person is left on their own; set the number of teams to half the group, rounded down, to get one group of three instead.
Is it truly random?
The shuffle uses the browser’s cryptographic random generator, so every arrangement of the list is equally likely.
