Differences
Compare two versions of a text and see exactly which words changed. Paste the original and the edited version, and every deleted word is struck in red while every new word is marked in green, inside the sentence where it happened. Useful for checking edits to essays, contracts, translations and web copy.
How to use
- Paste the original text on the left (or top) and the changed text on the right, or drop a file onto each box. Drop two files at once to fill both.
- Differences appear as you type: removed lines in red, added lines in green, and changed words highlighted inside each line.
- Choose Inline or Side by side, and highlight by lines, words or characters. Ignore case or spaces to hide noise.
- Copy the unified diff (patch) or download it as a .diff file to share or apply with git.
- Unchanged stretches are folded to 3 lines of context; tap a fold to expand it.
- Side by side becomes a stacked view on narrow screens: each removed line sits right above its replacement.
- Large files (several MB) are compared in a background thread, so typing stays smooth.
- Nothing is uploaded: both texts stay in your browser.
Comparing prose instead of code
Line-based tools mark a whole paragraph as changed when one comma moved. For prose, word highlighting is usually more useful: the paragraph stays readable and only the edited words are colored. Character highlighting goes one step further and shows a single changed letter, which is handy for spotting typos, swapped digits in figures or a changed date.
Ignore case hides changes that only affect capital letters, and ignore whitespace hides double spaces and line breaks that were added or removed while editing.
Typical uses
Check what an editor or a colleague changed when no track changes were kept, compare two drafts of a cover letter, confirm that a contract you received matches the version you agreed on, or see what changed between two versions of a terms page. For Word or PDF files, copy the text out first and paste it into each box.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two texts for differences?
Paste the original on the left or top and the new version on the right or bottom. Changes are highlighted as you type.
Can it show changes word by word?
Yes. Word highlighting is the default here; switch to character highlighting to see single changed letters or digits.
Can I compare two Word documents?
Copy the text of each document and paste it into the two boxes. Formatting is not compared, only the words.
Does it detect moved paragraphs?
A moved paragraph shows up as a deletion in one place and an insertion in another, since the comparison follows the order of the text.
Is the text I paste private?
Yes. The comparison runs in your browser and the text is never sent to a server.
