      Column

Sets up a sprint board with five columns: Backlog, To do, In progress, Review and Done, with a WIP limit of 3 on In progress. Pull cards from the backlog at sprint planning, move them across during the sprint, and clear Done at the retrospective.

      How to use

      1. Type a task and press Enter. Add #tags, !1 to !3 for priority, or today, tomorrow or a date like 2026-05-01 to set the due date.
      2. Tap the circle to complete a task. Tap the title to edit it, or the arrow for due date, priority, repeat, notes and subtasks.
      3. Drag the dots handle to reorder. On the board, drag cards between columns; on touch screens press and hold a card first.
      4. Use Lists for separate projects and Today, Upcoming and Done to filter. Repeating tasks create the next one when you complete them.
      • Everything is saved automatically in this browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Export JSON from List settings to keep a backup or move your tasks to another device.
      • Import accepts the JSON backup, CSV files with a title column (from spreadsheets or other apps) and plain text or Markdown with one task per line.
      • Paste several lines into the input to add them as separate tasks.
      • Checklist mode keeps ticked items in place and shows progress. Uncheck all resets a list you use again and again, such as a packing list.
      • A WIP limit marks a board column red when it holds more cards than the limit.

      How kanban works

Kanban comes from the Toyota Production System, where cards signalled when more work could be pulled in. On a board, each card is a task and each column a stage. Work moves left to right, and you only pull a new card into Doing when there is room. That makes bottlenecks visible: if Review keeps filling up, the problem is there, not in how fast new tasks arrive.

A WIP (work in progress) limit caps how many cards a column may hold. Here the column turns red when it is over its limit. Lower limits mean fewer half-finished tasks and shorter time from start to done; a common starting point is two or three cards per person in Doing.

Using the board day to day

Add a card by typing in a column, drag it to the next stage, or move it with Alt+← and Alt+→ on the keyboard. On touch screens, press and hold a card before dragging. Rename columns to fit your process, for example Ideas, Writing, Editing, Published. A quick look at the board each morning, moving cards and checking limits, replaces most status meetings for a small team.

      Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between kanban and a to-do list?

A to-do list shows what needs doing; a kanban board also shows which stage each task is in. Here both are views of the same tasks, so you can switch at any time.

      What is a WIP limit?

The maximum number of cards allowed in a column. When a column turns red, finish something before starting something new.

Can I add my own columns?

Yes. Add, rename, reorder or remove columns, and set a WIP limit on any of them.

Can my team share a board?

Not live. The board is stored in your browser only. You can export it as JSON or CSV and send it to someone who imports it.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Columns scroll sideways on small screens, and cards move by press-and-hold dragging.
