How much should I weigh for my height? This ideal weight calculator gives your ideal body weight from height and sex using four classic formulas, Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, and shows the healthy weight range from the WHO BMI bands next to them. Use it as a reference point, not a target you must hit.

How to use

  1. Pick a calculator in the tabs and choose metric or imperial units; the choice is remembered.
  2. Body fat: measure your neck below the larynx, your waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women) and hips at the widest point, then enter them. Or switch to From BMI.
  3. Ideal weight: enter height and sex. One-rep max: enter the weight and reps of a hard set. Calories: pick an activity and minutes. Water: weight and daily exercise. Steps: step count and your height or stride.
  4. Results update as you type. Tap any result to copy it.
  • The US Navy method (Hodgdon and Beckett, 1984) is usually within 3–4 percentage points of a DEXA scan. The BMI method (Deurenberg, 1991) is rougher and overestimates fat in muscular people.
  • Ideal weight formulas were made for drug dosing, not as health targets; the BMI range is a broader guide.
  • 1RM: Epley = w × (1 + reps/30), Brzycki = w × 36 / (37 − reps), Lombardi = w × reps^0.10. All are most accurate for 2 to 10 reps.
  • Calories use MET × weight (kg) × hours from the Compendium of Physical Activities and include your resting burn. Fitness trackers and machines may show different numbers.
  • Water: about 35 ml per kg plus exercise. Food covers roughly 20% of water intake; EFSA suggests about 2.0 L a day for women and 2.5 L for men from all sources.

The four formulas

All start from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount per inch above it. Devine (1974): 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women plus 2.3 kg per inch. Robinson (1983): 52 or 49 kg plus 1.9 or 1.7 kg. Miller (1983): 56.2 or 53.1 kg plus 1.41 or 1.36 kg. Hamwi (1964): 48 or 45.5 kg plus 2.7 or 2.2 kg.

For a 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) man, Devine gives about 70.5 kg, Robinson 68.9 kg, Miller 68.8 kg and Hamwi 72.0 kg.

Why the BMI range matters more

These formulas were created mainly for drug dosing, not as health goals, and they ignore frame size, muscle and age. The WHO healthy BMI range of 18.5–24.9 covers a wider band; for 175 cm that is about 56.7–76.3 kg. Any weight in that range can be healthy.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight for my height?

Enter your height and sex. You get the result of four formulas plus the WHO healthy BMI range, which is the better everyday guide.

What is the Devine formula?

50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women plus 2.3 kg for every inch over 5 feet. It is widely used in medicine to dose drugs.

Why do the formulas give different results?

They were fitted to different data sets and decades. The spread between them shows that there is no single ideal number.

Do the formulas work for short people?

They are designed for heights over 5 feet (152 cm). Below that, the BMI range is more meaningful.

Does muscle change my ideal weight?

Yes. Muscular people can be healthy above these numbers. Body fat percentage or waist size gives more insight.
